Almost everywhere you look nowadays, you can see a photo or fashion advertisement on social media, a magazine, or a billboard. These photos are everywhere, so when one can capture your attention, it has done its job. You may think the picture is beautiful, or you may hate it. But it is hard to create a story in a photograph that can capture consumers' attention. In this blog, I will explain the behind-the-scenes of creating fashion imagery.

#1 - Conceptualize an idea

My Mass Media and Fashion class tasked us with a project to do a fashion photoshoot and create fashion imagery around the idea of La Parisienne. So we already had our vision for the photoshoot. Another way to think of ideas is to look at past fashion photoshoots and get inspired by them.

#2 - Brainstorm a story

The idea is the tip of the iceberg. The story creates a more profound meaning within the photos, drawing consumers to your picture. My groupmates thought of a brilliant story behind the idea of La Parisienne. The story revolves around two characters: La Parisienne and La Parisienne imitator. It allowed us to have two models and, therefore, many ideas for photos.

#3 - Create a storyboard/mood-board

Thinking of the story may seem like all you need to do before the photoshoot. However, creating a storyboard or mood board for the photo shoot is essential. This allows you to think of outfit ideas, location, props, and poses and develop your story more profoundly. Below is the mood-board for our photoshoot.

#4 - Photoshoot day!

Now that you have everything in order, you can finally start shooting! No matter how much you plan your photoshoot and ideas, they may go differently than you think. It is vital to loosen up and draw inspiration from your surroundings and the people around you. Change up the story if that is what is best. I was the photographer and constantly listened to the ideas of the models and the creative director. It allowed us to have a fun photoshoot!

#5 - Edit and put photos in order

Once you have taken thousands of photos, it is time to sit down and choose the best ones. From there, you will edit them to your liking. Then one of the most critical parts of fashion imagery is to put the photos in the proper order so that it successfully tells your story. Below you can see the images from our photoshoot in the order of the story!

I hope with this information, you can do a photo shoot of your own!
