One my favorite trips abroad so far has been a quick, two day trip to the beautiful city of Copenhagen. Myself and a group of six friends all traveled North for the weekend. Coming back to Paris, I feel inspired by the Danish style, architecture and culture I was immersed in for a short period of time.
In the 1 degree Celsius and slight snowfall, the people of Denmark happily stroll along the colorful streets. Wearing the bare minimum to shield from the cold, young tall couples walk with their strollers speaking in their unfamiliar tongue. I feel comfortable with my height of almost six feet, as I am no longer apart of the minority as a woman, but actually often find myself looking up to engage with a Dane.
The people were something I have yet to find an abundance of in Europe: friendly. Engaging, talkative, kind and curious all took me by surprise as I am normally met with shortness or an eye roll when speaking English in France.
These sweet people were starting to get into the spirit as Christmas markets were spread across the city. Gløgg (or mulled wine), ornaments, mittens and the perfect little gifts were sold by merchants in wooden shelters. The auroma of bratwurst, herring, spiked coffee and smørrebrø (or open faced sandwiches), flooded in between the wooden tents. The warm gløgg offered my freezing hands some relief as I sipped and from the mug.
The seven of us proceeded to brave the cold as we explored Copenhaven. The city itself was beautiful, brick and colorful buildings contrasted one another while other neutral buildings resembled Parisian architecture. As we walked, bikes would zoom past by the dozen or runners would pass as they ran along the frigid river.
Along our way, we stopped into shops where the associates seem happy to be there while engaging with us. Puffer Jackets, scarves, thermal long sleeves and boots of all kinds are the only thing on the shelves this time of the year. Magasin Du Nord was a department store we ducked into to not only escape the frigid temperatures but peek at the sales that were being advertised. Magasin carried all types of brands from Ba&sh to Ugg to speciality Danish companies.
Overall, the trip was one I would love to do all over again. A beautiful place, wonderful people and great company made our time fly by. If you have the opportunity to go North, take it!
xoxo,
Ella
