Looking for something to carry all of your essentials across the Seine, to the Eiffel and back again? No need to fret, there are plenty of options to accompany your journey.

When in the United States, you may not think of safety and security first when picking out your bag. Frills, bold colors, flap bags or shoulder bags may be best to leave behind during your stay in Paris. Pickpockets are notorious in the big city, so being conscious of your items and the bag they are in can avoid you running into any kind of trouble.

Good thing you do not have to sacrifice fashion over safety! These bags are still stylish while keeping your items secure.

The Tote

On our first day studying abroad, one of our teachers pointed out “nothing screams poor like a tote bag”. Totes are practical, simple bags which can carry just about anything: your wallet, computer, umbrella, jacket and so much more. They are typically relatively cheap and can be found just about anywhere. Totes are also hard to pickpocket since the opening of the bag itself is so close to your underarm as you walk with them on your shoulder. When in doubt, tote it out!

The Cross Body

The classic cross body can be seen slung across many Parisians' shoulders. It is a smaller, lightweight bag that can stay in front of your body at all times. This type allows you to have an eye on your belongings and is a deterrent to pickpockets. Typically, cross body bags are smaller, but still allow you to carry some of your everyday belongings: your phone, portable charger, lipstick, a small mirror and more.

Wallet with a Strap

Finally the simplest bag to carry along your travels, a wallet with a strap. Your important items like credit cards, passport, cash and coins can be kept on your person at all times. This typically tiny bag is light and easy to carry on long trips and will keep your essentials close to your person at all time!

Some Bags to Avoid

Some bags to avoid while in the big city can include backpacks, flap bags or fanny packs.

Backpacks worn out of your view are subject to theft, keeping all your valuables in front of you and in sight is the best way to ensure your stuff stays safe.

Flap bags that are easy to lift and access can also be more of a risk while using the metro or exploring touristy places.

Finally, nothing screams ‘I’m a tourist’, like a fanny pack will. While okay to use in a pinch, you should not make a habit of suing your fanny pack everyday.

Hope this Helps!
